Sephardica Press is an independent Judaica publishing house dedicated to preserving, translating, and transmitting the enduring treasures of the Jewish spiritual and intellectual tradition.
For centuries, Jewish scholars wrote across a remarkable range of disciplines and intellectual traditions. Their works addressed questions of faith and reason, philosophy and theology, ethics and law, science and education, history and communal life. Many of these works remain known only to specialists, while others have never been adequately translated for contemporary readers.
Sephardica Press seeks to help change that.
Through faithful translations, historical scholarship, and extensive annotation, we make significant Jewish texts accessible to English-speaking readers while seeking to preserve the character, vocabulary, and intellectual and spiritual integrity of their original voices.
Our publications are intended for students, rabbis, scholars, educators, and thoughtful readers who wish to engage Jewish tradition seriously. We write for readers who value both fidelity to tradition and intellectual openness, and who recognize that Jewish learning has always flourished through encounter, inquiry, interpretation, and dialogue.
Mission statement
At Sephardica Press, we believe that the Jewish intellectual tradition is not a museum to be
observed but a living inheritance to be studied, questioned, and carried forward.
Our mission is to recover works and voices that have been overlooked, neglected, or
insufficiently accessible; to translate them with care; to provide the historical and intellectual context necessary for understanding them; and to return them to the broader conversation of Jewish life.
We believe that translation is more than the transfer of words from one language to another. A good translation opens a door. It allows a work written in another time and place to speak again—to be read, considered, challenged, and appreciated by a new generation.
For this reason, our books combine careful translation with scholarly annotation and accessible exposition. We seek neither to modernize the past beyond recognition nor to leave it inaccessible behind a wall of technical scholarship. Instead, we strive to create a meeting place between the original work and the contemporary reader.
Recovering a Broader Canon
The Jewish intellectual tradition is larger and more diverse than any single canon can convey.
Sephardica Press is particularly interested in works that illuminate the breadth of Jewish spiritual and intellectual history across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Europe, and the wider Jewish world. We seek out voices whose contributions have been overshadowed by more familiar narratives and works whose ideas remain relevant to the questions confronting Jewish readers today.
Our aim is not simply to add forgotten books to a library. It is to broaden our understanding of what Jewish intellectual life has been—and what it can continue to become.
Tradition in Conversation
The great works of Jewish thought were themselves often responses to questions, encounters, controversies, and intellectual challenges. Reading them today can therefore become an invitation to participate in the same ongoing conversation.
Sephardica Press seeks to contribute to that conversation by bringing important Jewish works into wider circulation and helping readers encounter the tradition in all its intellectual richness, complexity, and diversity.
